Jökulsárlón 📍 is Iceland’s most famous glacier lagoon, located at the edge of Vatnajökull National Park in the southeast. Formed in the 1930s as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier began to retreat, it is now a deep, icy-blue lake filled with floating icebergs that drift slowly toward the Atlantic Ocean. Seals can often be spotted swimming among the ice, and the contrast between the shimmering glacier, the black sand beaches nearby, and the constantly changing ice formations makes it one of Iceland’s most photogenic and surreal landscapes.


'...In 2002, Jökulsárlón became an unexpected film star when its icy waters stood in for a Siberian setting in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. For the shoot, part of the lagoon was temporarily dammed to freeze its surface, an unusual sight, since the tides usually keep the water moving. The sequence featured high-speed car chases over the ice, turning this quiet, otherworldly lagoon into the backdrop for one of Bond’s most dramatic escapes...'
