Fagradalsfjall 📍 is a volcanic system on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, about 40 kilometers from Reykjavík. Long dormant for over 6,000 years, it erupted spectacularly in March 2021, creating rivers of glowing lava that flowed for months. Easily accessible from the capital, the site became a rare opportunity to witness an active eruption up close, with hiking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints over the fresh lava fields. Today, the cooled black rock formations remain a dramatic reminder of Iceland’s raw, ever-changing geology.
