The Krafla Geothermal Power Plant 📍, located near Mývatn in northern Iceland, harnesses the immense volcanic energy beneath the Krafla caldera. Opened in 1977, it uses superheated steam from deep geothermal wells to generate electricity, supplying much of the region’s power in a clean and renewable way. Surrounded by steaming vents, colorful mineral deposits, and lava fields from past eruptions, it offers visitors a striking blend of cutting-edge technology and raw volcanic landscape.

'...When drilling one of the wells in 2009, engineers unexpectedly struck a pocket of magma just 2 kilometers below the surface, something that had only happened a handful of times in history. Instead of halting operations, they took the rare opportunity to study the molten rock directly, leading to the “Iceland Deep Drilling Project” that tested the potential of tapping superheated fluids for even greater energy output. It turned the Krafla site into both a power station and a world-class geological laboratory...'
