The porticoes leading up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca in Bologna 📍 form one of the city’s most remarkable and symbolic landmarks. Stretching for almost 4 kilometers with 666 arches, they connect the city’s Porta Saragozza with the basilica that crowns Colle della Guardia. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the covered arcade was designed to protect the sacred icon of the Virgin during processions and to offer shelter to pilgrims along the ascent. Today, the walk beneath the endless arches, climbing steadily toward the sanctuary, is both a spiritual journey and a cultural experience, combining devotion, architecture, and breathtaking views over Bologna.

Each year, during the Ascension week, the icon of the Virgin is carried down from the basilica to the cathedral in the city center, retracing the path that pilgrims have walked for centuries. Whether approached as a religious act, a local ritual, or simply a striking urban hike, the porticoes to San Luca remain one of Bologna’s most unique and timeless experiences...'
